Books that I have read and enjoyed as opposed to books one is supposed to have read and enjoyed. Though some of these books would be better introduced with warning labels than endorsements (i.e., not all are Christian texts).

1. The Bible because there is no substitute if we want to understand our own cultural history.

2. Augustine, The Confessions and The City of God.

3. Berry, Wendell, novels and poetry.

4. Bloom, Allan, The Closing of the American Mind: how higher education has failed democracy and impoverished the souls of today's students. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1988, c1987.

5. Bloom, Metropolitan Anthony (Archbishop Anthony Bloom), Meditations on a theme: a spiritual journey (London, Oxford, Mowbrays, 1972, c1971) and School for Prayer (now published as Living Prayer).

6. Bonhoeffer, Dietrich, The Cost of Discipleship (London: SCM Press, 1964, c1959), Letters and Papers from Prison (Nwe York, Macmillan, 1967), and Life Together (New York, Harper, 1954).

7. Bruce, FF, The Spreading Flame: the rise and progress of Christianity from its first beginnings to the conversion of the English (Exeter: Paternoster Press, 1982) and his bible commentaries (most published by Grand Rapids, Mich.: Eerdmans).

8. Chesterton, GK, Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man (New York, Dodd, Mead and company, 1943, c 1925).

9. Colson's books - marvellous stories, terrible style.

10. Cronin, AJ, The Keys of the Kingdom. A family favourite.

11. Dallimore's biography of Whitfield.

12. Dostoyevsky especially The Brothers Karamazov.

13. Eliot, George, especially Adam Bede and Middlemarch.

14. Elliott, Elizabeth, for the challenge.

15. Ellul, Jacques, especially The Subversion of Christianity and The Humiliation of the Word.

16. Greene, Graham, his novels especially as they deal with faith.

17. Grubb, Rees Howells Intercessor. Almost beyond belief.

18. Hardy, Thomas. His novels especially Jude the Obscure.

19. Hoggart, Richard, The Uses of Literacy: aspects of working class life, with special reference to publications and entertainments (London: Chatto and Windus, 1971, 1957)

20. Hopkin's biography of Charles Simeon.

21. Hugo, Victor, Les Miserables.

22. Johnson, Paul, A History of Christianity (New York: Atheneum, 1976, t.p.1977) and Intellectuals (New York: Harper and row, c1988 or New York: Perennial Library, 1990, c1988).

23. Koestler, Arthur, The Ghost in the Machine (New York: Macmillan, 1968, c1967) and Darkness at Noon (translated by Daphne Hardy) (Harmondsworth: Penguin Books, 1965, c1940).

24. Kreeft, Peter, all his books for the unique approach to apologetics, especially Making Sense out of Suffering and Three philosophies of Life, and many other titles.

25. Lewis, CS. All his work is worth reading: the Narnia stories, the science fiction, Till We Have Faces and the apologetics especially The Abolition of Man.

26. Lloyd-Jones, Martin, especially Faith on Trial, Joy Unspeakable, Spiritual Depression and The Sermon on the Mount. His Biography is also an excellent read.

27. Macdonald, George. His novels for the stories and their purpose.

28. Mackay, The Clockwork Image and Mind and Matter.

29. Manzoni, Alessandro, The Betrothed: a tale of XVII century Milan (translated by Archibald Colquhoun) (London: Dent, 1983).

30. MacIntyre, Alasdair, After Virtue: a study in moral theory (Notre Dame, Ind.: University of Notre Dame Press, 1984).

31. Medaware especially The Art of the Possible.

32. Muggeridge, Malcolm. Anything after his conversion is worth reading for its marvellous analysis of our times.

33. Newbiggin, Leslie, Foolishness to the Greeks.

34. O'Brien, Michael, Father Elijah's Apocalpse (Ignatius). A novel that reduces one to prayerful tears.

35. O'Donovan, Rediscovering Christianity.

36. Pascal, Blaise (1623-1662), The Pensees (translated and introduced by JM Cohen) (Harmondsworth: Penguin Books, c1961).

37. Polanyi Michael, Personal Knowledge

38. Popper for the philosophy of science. Easiest in Magee's Fontana book Popper.

39. Ramsey, Paul, The Patient as Person; explorations in medical ethics (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1970).

40. Roseveare, Helen, for the challenge.

41. Russell, Crosscurrents: A Christian Analysis of Science,

42. Sire, James, The Universe Next Door, easy to read introduction to world views.

43. Solzenhitsyn especially The Gulag, Cancer ward.

44. St John of the Cross, The Dark Night of the Soul (translated, abridged, and edited by Kurt Reinhardt) (New York: F. Ungar Publishing Company, 1957).

45. St Thomas a Kempis, The Imitation of Christ (translated and introduced by Leo Sherley-Price) (New York: Dorset, 1986).

46. Stott, JRW, Basic Christianity and The Sermon on the Mount. "The Bible Speaks for Today" is an excellent series of commentaries edited by Stott.

47. Taylor, AJP, on British history (Oxford University Press).

48. Tolkien, JRR, The Lord of the Rings.

49. Vitz, Paul, Psychology as Religion: the cult of self-worshiping (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, c1977).

50. Weils, Simone, her books on problems with faith.

51. Wesley, John (1703-1791)

  • The journal of John Wesley: a selection (edited and introduced by Elisabeth Jay) (Oxford, New York: Oxford University Press, 1987).

Poetry: Herbert, Donne, Keats, Owen, Francis Thompson, Shakespeare, Eliot, Hopkins and Wordsworth. Other Men's Flowers by Wavell is my favourite anthology.
